Question: Our pastor recently said that every person has a unique calling from God, but I’ve never been able to discover what mine is. How can I know for sure?
Answer:
When it comes to discovering your God-given calling, you’re not alone, many believers wrestle with the same question. The beautiful truth is this: God has written a magnificent calling over your life, and He is far more committed to revealing it than you are to discovering it. If necessary, He will move heaven and earth to lead you into the very destiny He crafted for you before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 2:10). But like all sacred things, the details unfold over time and according to what your heart is ready to receive.
When I rededicated my life to Jesus, I sensed the call to ministry, but I had no clue what shape that calling would take. I’m a man of purpose, structure, and spreadsheets; I like a good plan. But at that time, the plan wasn’t clear. I’ll be honest: I was frustrated. I wanted the blueprint, but God only gave me the next step. So instead of grasping for clarity, I decided to chase relationship. I served faithfully. I showed up. I worshiped. I prayed. And after a few years of simply loving God and His people, the Spirit made it unmistakably clear: He was calling me to pastor. It came like a whisper, yet it carried the weight of heaven.
That’s the Kingdom way. Jesus doesn’t usually hand us the whole map, He invites us into the journey. Your role is to love Him with all your heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5) and trust that He will direct your steps (Psalm 37:23). Some assignments may feel uncomfortable or even unreasonable. But obedience opens doors that comfort never will. Many times, God uses those uncomfortable moments to pull buried gifts out of hiding—gifts He placed in you for Kingdom impact.
As you study the Word and spend time with the Lord, your spiritual hearing becomes sharper. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27), and the Holy Spirit delights in guiding you into all truth, including the truth about your calling (John 16:13). When the time is right, the instructions will come with clarity, peace, and divine confidence.
So keep seeking Him first (Matthew 6:33). Keep walking closely with Jesus. Your calling isn’t something you chase—it’s something He reveals as your heart aligns with His. Your purpose will meet you on the path of obedience.
