Why Can’t I Let Go of This One Fear, Even Though I Trust God?

Question: Dr. Tony, I trust God with all my heart, so I don’t understand why I’m finding it nearly impossible to surrender one particular fear. I’ve prayed and prayed, but my heart just can’t let go of this anxiety.

Answer:
You’ve already taken a powerful first step, recognizing the anxiety instead of pretending it isn’t there. One of Satan’s most effective strategies is distraction. He pushes us to stare at the situation, the “what ifs,” the pressure, the unknowns—until the fear feels bigger than God. But fear doesn’t begin on the outside; it begins within. Real healing happens when you are willing to face what’s going on beneath the surface and invite the Holy Spirit into those hidden places.

When anxiety grips your heart, pause and ask, What is the real root of this fear? Don’t rush past that question. Let the Spirit uncover what’s underneath: feelings of inadequacy, fear of failure, old guilt you’ve carried too long, or even an unbiblical view of God, like imagining Him as a harsh scorekeeper instead of a loving Father. Beneath many anxieties lies what I call “the recorder”—those old messages, misbeliefs, and childhood patterns that replay in the background of your mind without your permission.

When that fear rises, identify the recorder. Notice the thought and ask, Where did this come from? Who taught me to think this way? And once you recognize its source, reject it. You don’t have to let yesterday’s lies rule today’s peace. If that old recording tries to play again, refuse to listen.

Then turn your heart toward truth. Pray boldly:
“Father, thank You that this anxiety is not from You. You did not give me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). I reject this fear in the name of Jesus Christ. I refuse to be bound by it any longer.”

When you pray like this, you’re not denying the fear, you’re denying its authority. You’re taking your thoughts captive and making them obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). And you’re declaring Kingdom identity over yourself: a child of God, filled with His Spirit, strengthened by His love, anchored in His truth.

Then go to Scripture. Let God speak the final word—peace to your storm, truth to your anxiety, identity to your fears. Your heart may not shift overnight, but the Holy Spirit will keep working, peeling back layers, healing wounds, and replacing lies with truth.

The fear may feel stubborn, but Jesus is stronger. And every time you choose truth over the recorder, you’re walking into deeper freedom.
