How Do I Help a Friend Who Has Hardened His Heart Toward God?

Question: What are the best ways to minister to a friend who has hardened his heart and given up on being a follower of Christ?

Answer:
When someone you love walks away from Jesus, it can feel heartbreaking and confusing. The first loving step is to pause and ask: What wounded their heart? Has your friend ever shared why they turned away—maybe a betrayal, deep disappointment, unanswered prayer, or pain caused by other Christians? When you understand the root of their hurt, you’ll know better how to pray and how to approach them with compassion instead of frustration.

Prayer is not the “easy part”—it’s the essential part. In the Kingdom of God, prayer is where the real battle is fought. As you intercede for your friend, ask the Holy Spirit to soften their heart, reveal lies they’ve believed, and surround them with people and moments that point them back to Jesus. God specializes in taking hearts of stone and turning them into hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). No one is too far gone while it is still called “today.”

Hebrews 3:12–13 gives us a powerful blueprint: “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart… But exhort one another every day… that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” That means your role is both to pray and to lovingly speak. When the time is right, talk with your friend gently but honestly. Let your love be obvious. Listen more than you lecture. Share how Jesus has met you in your own doubts and pain. Remind them that even their disappointment is not beyond God’s ability to heal.

Be clear about the reality of a hardened heart, it slowly drains life of peace, purpose, and joy (Proverbs 4:23). But also be clear about the hope: the Father is still running toward prodigals (Luke 15:20). Jesus is still the Good Shepherd who goes after the one who wandered (Luke 15:4).

If your friend doesn’t respond right away, don’t lose heart. Keep praying. Ask the Lord, if necessary, to arrange circumstances that bring them to a place of repentance and surrender. That might sound bold, but there is nothing more important than the condition of a person’s heart in light of eternity.

And as you stand in the gap, remember, you’re not doing this alone. The King of the Kingdom is pursuing your friend, too. Keep hoping, keep loving, and keep believing that Jesus can bring them home.
