Rising Above Expectations: Finding Freedom and Identity in Christ

What happens when we can’t live up to people’s expectations of us? When those who once admired us begin to withdraw their approval, disappointment can flood our hearts like an unexpected storm. Their unmet expectations can weigh us down, leaving us struggling to stay afloat in a sea of frustration, guilt, and rejection. We start swimming harder, trying to be everything to everyone, only to find ourselves sinking deeper under the pressure.

I know this feeling all too well. For years, I was drowning in the sea of expectation—trying to please everyone, desperate for approval, and terrified of letting anyone down. I let people’s opinions define me. I carried their disappointments as my own failures. Every critical word pierced through my emotions and bruised my soul. I thought if I could just do enough, be enough, and please enough people, I would finally feel worthy. But all that effort only left me exhausted, discouraged, and empty.

In trying to make everyone else happy, I had forgotten how to breathe.

Then one day, I realized that I needed to stop fighting the waves and grab hold of the only life jacket strong enough to keep me afloat—my identity in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” That verse became my rescue line. It reminded me that I am not who people say I am. I am not defined by my mistakes, my performance, or anyone else’s approval. I am who God says I am—a new creation, fully accepted and deeply loved.

And then I found strength in Ephesians 2:10, which declares, “For we are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” That verse helped me breathe again. Even when I fall short of people’s expectations, I am still His masterpiece. God designed me with purpose, and His plans for me are not dependent on anyone’s opinion.

You see, missing someone’s mark for your life doesn’t mean you’ve missed God’s mark.

When you anchor your identity in Christ, you no longer have to perform for acceptance—you live from it. You no longer have to chase validation—you rest in it. God alone holds the blueprint for your life, and He’s building something beautiful that no one else can design or destroy.

So today, if you feel like you’re drowning under the weight of other people’s expectations, let go of the pressure and reach for the life jacket of grace. Let Jesus lift you above the waves. Let His truth calm your fears and steady your heart.

Because when you know who you are in Christ, you don’t have to sink in the sea of expectation—you can swim confidently in the freedom of God’s design.
